Underground explosion causes five hour blackout downtown

HONOLULU (HawaiiNewsNow) – 1100 customers in downtown Honolulu were in the dark Thursday for around five hours after an underground explosion injured two Hawaiian Electric workers. At 10:19 AM rescuers were called to the corner of South Pauahi Street and the Fort Street Mall after an explosion in an underground vault injured the two workers.

One of the workers, a man in his forties, was taken to the trauma center in critical condition with flash burns to 10% of his body. His condition has since improved. Another worker was treated at the scene for minor burns.

All power was restored at 3:15 PM. Hawaiian Electric says that the outage will be investigated.
