HONOLULU (HawaiiNewsNow) - Howard Dicus told you a couple days ago that Hawaii farm production was running over $600 million a year. Now a companion report tells us that Hawaii farm exports to the US mainland top $400 million a year.
Now, this is not apples to apples, or mangoes to mangoes. Often value is added before farm products leave our shores. But this data still gives a sense of what our farm products are worth, and also of which ones produce the most value.
To give you the general picture I'll tell you about four kinds of farm exports, and keep in mind this data comes from 2008 so it doesn't reflect some of the downsizing we saw last year. Hawaii cattle exports are worth more than $15 million a year.
Floriculture and nursery exports are worth almost triple that - $43 million. Sugar and molasses exports, more than $70 million. And seed exports, $177 million.
