HONOLULU (HawaiiNewsNow) For years ocean debris has been collecting in Hawaiian waters suffocating reefs and killing sea animals. Tuesday the National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration (NOAA) along with 60 other state, county and private sector partners unveiled a long term plan to combat the problem.

The plan includes strategies to remove the garbage, educate the public on the dumping of fishing gear and nets, and reduce the number of abandoned ocean vessels.

"The significance of today's event shows Hawaii as a true leader of addressing marine debris. We would love to see this type of model around the country" said Dr. Holly Bamford, NOAA Marine Debris Division chief.

The final goal of the plan is to eliminate garbage coming from inland that makes its way through waterways to the ocean.
