HONOLULU (HawaiiNewsNow) - The latest farm report is a big one, the annual report on Hawaii farm revenues, based on 2008 figures that were tabulated throughout 2009.
Total local farm revenues rose 8 percent to top $600 million. Of 20 kinds of agriculture, 9 rise, including seed crops, mac nuts, microalgae, papaya, and sod.
Remember landscaping is a major component of Hawaii agriculture, and the microalgae segment includes companies like Cyanotech and Mera Pharmaceuticals that turn the stuff into anti-oxidant pills.
Coffee fell in 2008 but may have leveled out in 2009. Livestock business declined. We can expect a decline when we get the 2009 figures because of the twilight of sugar and pineapple.
