HONOLULU (HawaiiNewsNow) - It's Sony Open week in Hawaii and what a week it'll be for University of Hawaii golfer T.J. Kua.
Last month, he won a qualifying event, so this week, the 19 year old from Kauai will tee it up with the big boys at Waialae.
"This is where you want to compete," Kua said. "See where my game is against the real deal and maybe you can learn a few things this week. That's the main thing I want to learn how to do."
Kua won the prestigious Manoa Cup last summer, but this will be his first PGA event. His goal is to make the cut and don't count him out.
Good golf runs in the family. Kua's uncle is 1990 Sony Open winner David Ishii.
"He's so good," said local pro Kevin Hayashi. "He's got David's hands in the bunker, chipping, putting. He's like a David Ishii, but better putter."
"I've been working on that (putting) a lot," Kua said. "I kinda feel comfortable on the greens over here. They roll really nice and its hard to miss."
