HONOLULU (HawaiiNewsNow) - The Board of Education on Monday named its new interim superintendent.

The acting tag was lifted from Kathryn Matayoshi's position and she will serve until July 11th.

Matayoshi previously served as the deputy superintendent. She assumed the acting position following the sudden New Year's Eve retirement of Pat Hamamoto.

But not every board member was in favor of Matayoshi. At the start of Monday's meeting, the chairman and a board member disagreed about the selection process.

"The board should've had a discussion about the process because some of us may have wanted some other person to be considered, so why don't I have that opportunity?" Board member Breene Harimoto asked.

Members also voted to establish a board committee to conduct a national search for a superintendent.

The board plans to talk about the position at its next meeting on January 21st.
