MAKAHA (HawaiiNewsNow) - Employees at the Makaha Resort and Golf Club received some bad news Friday. What's known is many of them will lose their jobs. But what's not known -- yet is exactly how many. The move comes at a time when Hawaii's tourism industry is reeling from low visitor numbers.

At the resort Friday, it looked like business as usual for the leeward Oahu establishment. Sources say the layoffs began at the first of the year, with most departments being cut by at least half. In addition, there were talks of possibly selling the resort to a new owner.

One Waianae resident we spoke with says the layoffs will hurt the local landscape.

"Others like me, kamaaina and homegrown have a great appreciation because it's a local service. You deal with faces that you've known from either childhood or in your adult life so that makes a big difference" said Hanalei Aiopoalani.

Staff were told the reason for the layoffs was a business decision, and there just wasn't enough money to operate the resort at the current capacity. So far there are no plans to close the resort. Calls to the owners of the property in Canada were not returned.
