Parents of children burned by fireworks under investigation

WAILUKU, Maui (HawaiiNewsNow) – The parents of two children severely burned by fireworks early New Year 's Day may face criminal charges according to investigators. Police have initiated cases of child abuse, endangering the welfare of a minor and reckless endangering against the parents of a seven-year-old girl and an eleven-year-old boy who were badly burned while playing with fireworks.

The children were playing with fireworks in the back of their family's pick-up truck when a number of fireworks in the truck bed ignited, setting the children's clothes on fire. The girl suffered third-degree burns to both legs and the boy received second degree burns. Both children were flown to Kapiolani Medical Center Friday, where they were last listed in critical condition.

Investigators at the scene found home-made fireworks at the scene, including aluminum cans that were duct taped together.
