Two Maui children critically injured by fireworks

WAILUKU, Maui (HawaiiNewsNow) – A seven-year-old girl and an eleven-year-old boy were burned early Friday morning as a result of playing with fireworks, police say. The incident happened in the Lower Waiehu subdivision just after midnight on New Year's Day.

The children were playing with fireworks in the bed of their family's pick-up truck when witnesses heard a loud boom. A number of fireworks, which were in the truck bed ignited, setting the children's clothes on fire.

Paramedics transported the two children to Maui Medical Center. Doctors there had the children flown to Kapiolani Medical Center on Oahu, where they were last listed in critical condition.

Investigators at the scene found home-made fireworks at the scene, including aluminum cans that were duct taped together.
