HONOLULU (HawaiiNewsNow) - "I would like to apologize to Marie Siarot for the injuries that she sustained in the fire. She did not deserve that," Kim Massey said.

The apology came before Circuit Judge Steven Alm sentenced Massey to 20 years for first-degree arson.

Outside the courtroom Siarot said Massey is still angry.

"To me, he was still looking at me with hate in his face," she said.

In 2006, Massey and Siarot argued in his home in Honokai Hale. Prosecutors said he doused her with gasoline then set her on fire.

"I can't describe all the suffering that my sister's been through," John Siarot said.

It took three trials before the guilty verdict was rendered. The first two ended in mistrials.

Massey argued that the incident was an accident.

Public Defender Debra Loy told the judge Massey was reckless but never intended harm.

"That does not dispute the bodily injury. It does not dispute the pain and suffering Ms. Siarot had," she said. "It does not change anything, except we are disputing the mental state with which Mr. Massey acted.

But the prosecutor praised the sentence.

"It will bring her, hopefully, closure, so she can move on from this -- some little sense of satisfaction that justice was served," deputy prosecutor Jeen Kwak said.

Siarot suffered third-degree burns over much of her body.

"It will affect the rest of my life but I'll move on," she said.
