Fireworks complaints and citations way up over last year

HONOLULU (HawaiiNewsNow) – Police issued 93 citations and made one arrest for fireworks violations over the News Year's holiday this year, a 600% increase from the 14 issued during New Year's 2009. Police are crediting the public this year for assisting the surge in enforcement as the number of complaints about fireworks were also up.

Many of the citations were issued for illegal aerials as well as for setting off fireworks outside of the 9:00 PM to 1:00 AM legal window on New Year's Eve. A 43-year-old man was arrested for possession of fireworks without a permit.

"One of the difficulties that officers encounter is that the officer has to actually view the violation, they have to actually see an individual committing a violation. The other is trying to get somebody to be a witness to a fireworks violation… people don't want to go to court to testify against their neighbor or friend" said Major Clayton Kau of HPD.

The Honolulu Fire Department reported three fireworks-related fires during the holiday. Fire officials are investigating a total of nine cases including four criminal property damage cases and one reckless endangering case.

Last year a total of 1,361 fireworks complaints were lodged, this year the number was up to 1,860.
