Smart Money Monday: Tips to Protect Your Identity

HONOLULU (HawaiiNewsNow) - Identity thieves know that a ton of sensitive financial documents, checks and money orders travel through the U.S. mail system. And, the new year is a particularly busy time. Brian Ishikawa, Bank of Hawaii's senior vice president and director of corporate security, joined Sunrise to tell us how we can protect ourselves.


Tips to Protect Your Identity:

1. Deposit outgoing mail at a Post Office or a blue U.S. Postal Service collection box, or give it directly to your letter carrier.

2. Retrieve incoming mail from your mail box sooner than later.

3. Consider using a mail box with a lock on it.

4. Review your monthly financial statements timely and report discrepancies to your bank immediately.

5. Review your consumer credit report annually.
