2009 firecracker permits on pace with last year

HONOLULU (HawaiiNewsNow) – Permits for the legal purchase of fireworks are on pace with last year, according to the Honolulu Fire Department. As of December 28, 5,362 permits had been sold at satellite city halls compared with 5,208 at the same time last year.

The number of permits sold is way down from previous years. In 2005, over 10,000 permits were sold by December 28.

Since 2004, Hawaii has required the purchase of a $25 permit for the purchase if up to 5,000 firecrackers. Novelty fireworks such as spinners, fountains and sparklers do not require a permit.

New Year's fireworks may only be purchased between December 26th and December 31st. They may only legally be set off between 9:00 PM New Year's Eve and 1:00 AM New Year's Day.
