Good Things: Susan Boyle, Good Riddance Day, Baby giraffe

Posted: Updated:

HONOLULU (HawaiiNewsNow) - British singing sensation Susan Boyle arrived in Japan. Boyle is in Toyko to appear on a popular Japanese new year's eve singing program. She topped the British album charts earlier this month and some United Kingdom media members are saying her album may be the best selling this year.

Some New Yorkers are taking the saying "out with the old, in with the new" literally. The Big Apple's times square was the site of the third annual "Good Riddance Day." Several hundred people showed up to get rid of all the bad memories from 2009. People wrote out on slips of paper all the bad karma from the year, including those extra pounds, bad eating habits and student loans. Others brought bills and old income tax records. All the paperwork was put into a big industrial shredder to be rid of before 2010.

A western Illinois zoo got an unexpected addition over the weekend. A baby giraffe was born Sunday at the Niabi zoo in Coal Valley. Zoo officials say the birth came as a bit of a surprise. A veterinarian went to examine the expectant mother, Mimi, and instead found a newborn. Mimi wasn't due for another few days. The calf is a boy and is already six feet tall and 150 pounds. He and Mimi are doing well.
