One brush fire in Kona still burning, another fire contained

KEALAKEKUA, Hawaii (HawaiiNewsNow) – Fire crews are working to control two separate brush fires burning in the South Kona district. There have been no reports of injury or damage to property, but smoke form the fires is affecting air quality in the South Kona and Kau districts. No road closures have been announced.

The first fire is seven miles mauka of the Kealakekua Ranch Center at about 4,000 feet above sea level. The area is heavily forested and contains Ohia and Koa trees of up to 50 feet in height. The fire is about 250 acres in size according to officials and started around 2:00 PM Sunday. Fire officials reported Monday that helicopter water drops were helping to control the blaze. Tuesday firefighters plan to extend fire breaks.

The second brush fire is in the area of Yee Hop Ranch near Honomalino. This fire is reported to be contained. Ranch personnel are monitoring the blaze and expect it to burn out.
