Big Island cell phone driving ban begins January 1

HILO, Hawaii (HawaiiNewsNow) - Drivers on the Big Island are being reminded that the New Year also brings a new law. Starting January 1, it will be illegal to use a cell phone or other mobile electronic device while driving, without a hands-free device.

The ban includes such devices as cell phones, text messaging devices, and laptop computers.

The penalty will not apply to emergency responders who are on the job. Penalties for those caught violating the new law face a fine of up to $150.
