MILILANI (HawaiiNewsNow) - Honolulu police are investigating an early morning fire in Mililani that destroyed a five bedroom home.

Investigators with the Honolulu Fire Department have determined the fire was intentionally set.

If the fire starter is caught, he or she could be charged with more than just arson.

The fire started at about 3:30 a.m. at 95-604 Wehewehe Loop.

One of the residents tells us five Navy men lived there.

Jedidiah Meadows, who said the lease is in his name, told Hawaii News Now the residents had guests over for a Christmas Eve celebration, but all of the residents left for a night on the town at about 9 p.m.

A guest who had been drinking decided not to go. He went to sleep on a bedroom floor. According to Meadows the sleeping man says he heard someone in the house shortly before the fire broke out.

The man, still groggy, thought the residents had returned and he went back to sleep. But a short time later he woke to the smell of smoke.

"By the time he became aware of what was going on and saw multiple fires and they were growing so rapidly, he started to fear for his life and then got out as quick as he could," Meadows said.

The man got of the house unhurt.

Fire investigators found evidence of four separate fires. One had been started in the living room and three others were started in bedrooms.

It is possible this arson investigation could grow into an attempted murder investigation.

An initial estimate puts the damage at $500,000.
