HONOLULU (HawaiiNewsNow) - An Oahu woman who allegedly threatened to kill First Lady Michelle Obama has been ordered to undergo an exam to determine her mental fitness.

Wearing a white prison jumpsuit, Kristy Lee Roshia, 35, appeared for a detention hearing at Federal Court in Honolulu Wednesday. But the judge put off any discussions regarding bail, saying her competency should be evaluated before proceeding any further.

Prosecutors indicated that Roshia might rely on an insanity defense.

According to an affidavit, the defendant called the Secret Service office in Boston and said, "I will kill Michelle Obama."

"We will take very seriously any threat against the President or any member of his family, particularly, obviously, since he's coming to Hawaii. That adds another level of seriousness to the threat," said first assistant U.S. attorney Elliot Enoki.

If convicted of threatening the First Lady, Roshia faces up to five years in prison.

She's also accused of striking a federal agent while in custody. That carries a punishment of up to eight years in prison.
