$9,000,000 for Hawaii homeless programs

$1.4 Billion in federal grants are coming to homeless programs around the nation, including $9,721,295 for Hawaii.

The Department of Housing and Urban Development is renewing the grants it says will keep 35 local homeless operations in the state going.

It is the first time HUD is renewing the funding early to prevent disruptions. More money for new projects will be announced in early 2010.

Programs in Hawaii include six Hawaii Public Housing Authority programs, Honolulu County's Safe Haven and New Beginnings, as well as others in Maili, Hale Kipa young adult transitional housing, and Veterans housing at Barbers Point and Kalaeloa.
