HONOLULU (HawaiiNewsNow) - An Aiea grandmother was beaten so badly that she needed to be placed on a ventilator to keep her alive. That's according to city prosecutors, who obtained an indictment against the alleged attacker Tuesday.

Darrel Wright, 49, is accused of repeatedly punching his grandmother in the head with such force that the 85-year-old suffered multiple fractures to her skull and lacerations to her face. Medics who responded to their home last Wednesday say the grandson confessed to them.

An Oahu grand jury indicted Wright on one count of attempted murder. A judge then issued an order barring the defendant from contacting the victim.

Wright, who has no prior convictions, remains in custody unable to post $500,000 bail.
