HONOLULU (HawaiiNewsNow) – Waves of 40 feet or higher are forecast for north shores on Christmas day. The National Weather Service has issued a high surf warning for north and west facing shores of Niihau, Kauai, Oahu, Molokai and Maui. West side surf is expected to be 20-30 feet.
Waves will rise rapidly today. By sundown north shores will be 20-30 feet. West shores will reach 15-20 feet by dark and continue to build overnight.
High surf that pounded north and west shores earlier this month caused considerable beach erosion in some locations. That has set the stage for significant wave run-up and additional beach erosion along exposed shorelines with this new swell.
A high surf warning means dangerous, battering waves will pound shorelines. This will result in very dangerous swimming conditions, deadly rip currents and severe beach erosion.
