HANA, Maui (HawaiiNewsNow) – A tour helicopter crashed on Maui Wednesday afternoon, injuring a federal inspector who was on board for a routine flight proficiency check. The copter, an A-Star AS-350 operated by Sunshine Helicopters, made a hard landing in an open pasture between the Hana Airport and Hana School around 1:45 PM with its floats deployed.

The helicopter pilot was also injured, although the injuries are not life-threatening. The Federal Aviation Administration (FAA) inspector broke his ankle. Both were transported by medevac to Maui Memorial Medical Center.

Sources say substantial damage to the tail boom of the aircraft occurred in the incident. The accident is under investigation.
