Police shoot and kill Puna man after standoff

PUNA, Hawaii (HawaiinewsNow) – Big Island police shot and killed a 60-year-old Puna man Wednesday afternoon after a standoff of over ten hours. Police say that the man, who has yet to be identified, fired a gun numerous times during the standoff.

Police responded to a home in Kehena Beach Estates just before 3:00 AM Wednesday after neighbors reported gunfire coming from the home. Police say additional shots were fired from inside the house as police worked to secure the perimeter of the property.

Neighbors were evacuated and Highway 137 was closed as police attempted to negotiate with the man. Investigators say a struggle ensued as the man exited the house at around 1:00 PM and the man was shot. Paramedics treated the man for his injuries, but he died a short time later.

The incident is still being investigated. The highway was reopened around 3:00 PM.

Police are withholding the man's name pending notification of his family.
