HONOLULU (HawaiiNewsNow) - More than 40 drivers in Moilili learned about pedestrian safety the hard way Tuesday morning. Honolulu police officers kept an eye on King Street, near the former Star Market, for anyone breaking the law.

That's in the area where 79-year-old Mal Sun Chun was struck and killed on her way to church November 3rd. She was in a crosswalk.

From 9:00 to 10:30 Tuesday morning officers issued 87 citations. Half were to drivers who didn't yield to pedestrians. About 24 were for seatbelt and cell phone violations. And a few jaywalkers were also written up.

"They need to be aware of the surroundings, make sure they try to make eye contact with drivers so that the drivers know that they're ready to cross the road. And make sure they're in the crosswalk" said Brennon Morioka of the Department of Transportation (DOT).

The DOT says half of all pedestrian deaths happen outside of marked crossings.
