HONOLULU (HawaiiNewsNow) -- The Hawaii Community Foundation has kicked off a $4.6 million drive to help families hit hard by the recession.

In a first installment Tuesday HCF, awarded nearly $900,000 to nine organizations from across the state, including Aloha United Way and Helping Hands Hawaii.

The money will help the non-profits put needy families in touch with government assistance programs, and mortgage foreclosure and personal finance counselors.

"We want Hawaii's residents to get the help they need," HCF president and CEO Kelvin Taketa said.

The grant money came from ebay founder Pierre Omidyar and a consortium of lead investors.
