HONOLULU (HawaiiNewsNow) - More time. That's what a judge gave a former Leilehua High football star Monday on what was supposed to be his sentencing.

19-year-old Rico Newman pleaded guilty to unlawful imprisonment and domestic abuse.

He was accused of kidnapping and sexually assaulting his estranged girlfriend back in February.

On Monday, a judge granted Newman a 30-day continuance, after his deputy public defender, Jerry Villanueva, asked for more time.

Villanueva says Newman is cleaning up his act. He was offered a job at the airport and schools are interested in his football prowess, but not if he has a felony on his record.

"We're asking the court to give us a little more time so that he can go through with the things he supposed to do to show this court, because he is trying, just that he needs a little more guidance," Villanueva said.

The prosecution says Newman hasn't been cooperating with them and that he's not taking this case seriously. The new sentencing date is now January 19th.
