Former US Attorney Kubo among those nominated for judgeships

HONOLULU (HawaiiNewsNow) – Governor Linda Lingle is asking for the public's input on nominees for vacancies to Hawaii's Intermediate Court of Appeals and the First Circuit Court of Oahu. The nominees were provided to Lingle by the state's Judicial Selection Commission, who review the background and qualifications of each nominee.

Noteworthy among the nominees is Ed Kubo, who recently stepped down as Hawaii's US Attorney after serving at the post since 2001. Kubo was mentioned for the post of Circuit Judge for the First Circuit Court of Oahu.

Other nominees for Circuit Court Judge are R. Mark Browning, district family judge, Family Court of the First Circuit; Colette Y. Garibaldi, district judge, District Court of the First Circuit; Lanson K. Kupau, partner at the firm Kobayashi Sugita & Goda and Dean E. Ochiai, vice president and managing attorney of First Insurance Company of Hawaii.

Recommended for the position of Associate Judge of Intermediate Court of Appeals were Sabrina S. McKenna, circuit judge, Circuit Court of the First Circuit; former circuit judge Steven M. Nakashima, currently a partner with Marr Jones & Wang; Karen T. Nakasone, deputy public defender; Department of Commerce and Consumer Affair (DCCA) director Lawrence M. Reifurth and Michael K. Tanigawa, an attorney and professor at Kapiolani Community College.

Public comments on the nominees may be sent via e-mail to governor.lingle@hawaii.gov or by fax at 808-586-0006.  The Governor's office asks that all comments be submitted by the close of business on Wednesday, December 23, 2009.
