Man accused of attempted mercy killing commits suicide

Robert Yagi Robert Yagi

KAILUA (HawaiiNewsNow) – The Honolulu Medical Examiner's office has confirmed that a man found dead in an Olomana home Sunday was 71-year-old Robert Yagi. Yagi had been charged last week with trying to kill his terminally ill wife, Leatrice, Tuesday night at Castle Medical Center in Kailua.

Police responded to Robert Yagi's home in Olomana Sunday afternoon, where his children reportedly found him hanging. The medical examiner ruled the death a suicide, saying the cause of death was asphyxiation due to hanging.

Yagi was released on bail last Thursday after being charged with attempted murder. Investigators say he took two flare guns into Castle Medical Center and tried to fire a shotgun round at his 71- year-old wife. The gun misfired and the wife was not seriously hurt.

The hospital notified Yagi on Friday that he was prohibited from entering the facility. Yagi's wife suffered a stroke several months ago, and her health was in decline.

Police say they are continuing to investigate the case.
