HONOLULU (HawaiiNewsNow) - Sunny Garcia disqualification from the Billabong Pipeline Masters Thursday for missing his heat is having quite a domino effect.
The guy surfing in Garcia's place could now be a factor in the ASP world title race. Lesson for round two: never count out the wildcards.
16-year-old John John Florence put on a clinic for tube rides. The youngest competitor at this event had the highest heat total on Friday with a two wave score of 18.9 out of 20. Three-time world champion and Kauai surfer Andy Irons had the next best score. Local boys won six of the nine heats ran on Friday. That's counting Garcia's replacement Torrey Meister. Meister upset 16th ranked Kai Otton of Australia.
Next up, the 21-year-old faces current world number one Mick Fanning which could change this year's world title race with Joel Parkinson.
