HONOLULU (HawaiiNewsNow) - The Salvation Army's "angel tree" program once again hopes to help make the Christmas wishes of thousands of children and seniors come true.

"On the front I tried to draw a Christmas tree and the north star. Inside I wrote a letter to our angel," Kobi Gima said.

The 5th graders at Wilson Elementary School are drawing and writing Christmas cards to a woman they don't even know.

"Dear Chen Han, (she's our angel) Me and my classmates want to wish you a Merry Christmas and a Happy New Year. From, Kobi" Gima wrote.

You see the kids sponsored an angel tree recipient. They picked 70-year-old Chen Han who wanted a comforter to help her get through those cold nights.

"It feels good because I like to share and to help people who are unfortunate," Angel Tree sponsor, Justin Tokuda said.

"Does anybody have any money to donate for our angel tree gift?" homeroom teacher Terry Drown asked.

Terry Drown had her students do extra chores at home to get a boost in their allowance and they used the money to pitch in.

"Like cleaning my room or washing the dishes," Rinka Shimizu said.

"I washed dishes and I cleaned my dad's car," Logan Kwak said.

"I washed my dad's car, washed the dishes, take out the trash and get the mail," Rei Ueda said.

"I washed the dishes and kept my room clean," Kassie Nakaya said.

If the class collects extra cash that will also be sent to Chen along with the comforter. In all Wilson Elementary sponsors 28 angel tree recipients. They've been doing so for at least the past 6 years. Teachers say it gives the kids a strong sense of responsibility. The kids say it just makes them happy.

Isn't that what the holiday season's all about?
