HONOLULU (HawaiiNewsNow) - US Rep. Neil Abercrombie of Hawaii said Friday morning he will resign from Congress. Abercrombie, who has been planning to run for governor, says he'll announce soon when his resignation will be effective. The formal announcement will be made in a press conference Sunday.
Abercrombie, a Democrat, has represented Hawaii's 1st Congressional District continuously since 1991.
In his statement Abercrombie described the situation over the last nine months in the State of Hawaii as "the most troubling episode in our state's fifty-year history." He then outlined a list of concerns including teacher furloughs, the response to swine flu, cuts to agriculture inspections and uncertainty surrounding the progress of the Oahu rail transit system.
