HONOLULU (HawaiiNewsNow) - An elderly man accused of firing a gun at his terminally ill wife was charged Thursday with attempted murder.
Robert Yagi, 71, is scheduled to make his first court appearance Friday.
According to a police affidavit, Leatrice Yagi, 71, has been hospitalized with a terminal illness since October and her husband has been seen in her room daily, tending to her needs and keeping her company.
But on Tuesday night, Robert Yagi allegedly took two orange flare guns into Castle Medical Center and made a botched attempt to fire a shotgun round at his wife. She was not seriously hurt.
A nurse reported hearing a loud bang and seeing smoke in Leatrice Yagi's room. Court documents say another nurse asked the patient what happened, and she replied, "My husband shot me."
The victim reportedly had black marks on her face and red marks, resembling blood, on her upper chest.
Investigators say Robert Yagi "may have tried to end his life at the same time" using the second loaded flare gun.
