Kauai police warn of Social Security phishing scam

LIHUE, Kauai (HawaiiNewsNow) – Police on Kauai are warning residents to be on the alert for unsolicited emails that appear to be from the Social Security Administration (SSA). If individuals receive an email that fits this description, you should delete it, police say.

The email tells users that something is wrong with their Social Security account and directs them to a bogus SSA web site. Once on the web site, the user is prompted to type his social security number and then download a statement. The statement is actually a virus, which if successfully loaded on to the users computer, will allow the scammer to obtain personal information, including bank account information.

"We want to alert the public about this new phishing scam and hope that people don't fall prey to it and become victims of identity theft," said Detective Randy Chong Tim.
