KAILUA (HawaiiNewsNow) - An elderly man is in Honolulu police custody, accused of taking a gun into a Windward Oahu hospital and firing it at his terminally ill wife.

The couple's long-time neighbors say they are stunned. They described the alleged gunman, Robert Yagi, 71, as very mellow.

People who live on Ululani Street in Olomana say they're used to seeing Robert Yagi in his yard and his wife, Leatrice, picking mangos from a neighbor's tree.

"Yeah, very nice people," Francis Calleon, neighbor, said. "I see them around. You know, they always seem to be together, always quiet, always getting along."

But Leatrice is now a patient at nearby Castle Medical Center. A neighbor says the 71-year-old suffered a stroke several months ago and, since then, her health has been deteriorating.

Sources say Robert Yagi showed up at her hospital room Tuesday night with a flare gun that was loaded with a shotgun shell, and fired at her. The flare gun reportedly didn't work properly because it couldn't handle the blast of a shotgun shell.

Sources say the only thing that hit Leatrice was the soft wadding. She was not seriously injured.

"I've been here 35 years. They've been here longer than me," Calleon said. "I've never heard a peep from them, no incident ever. This is the first time I've heard about anything. So we don't know what's going on."

Castle Medical Center issued a written statement.

"No staff, other patients or other guests were threatened or endangered by the perpetrator," it said.

"Security procedures are reviewed on a regular basis," it continued. "As with any crisis situation like this, security procedures will again be reviewed."

"I don't know what went on or what the mental state of him was," Calleon said. "But I just wish him the best. I hope his wife is alright."

Investigators say the hospital staff stopped the suspect as he left his wife's room and held him until police arrived. He's at HPD's main cellblock on suspicion of attempted murder.
