HONOLULU (HawaiiNewsNow) - Hundreds of athletes from around the state have their game on for the Special Olympics Hawaii Holiday Classic. There was a basketball game Saturday at Hickam Air Force Base's main gym.
Basketball is just one of several sports athletes are competing in, there's also bowling and bocce ball.
"It's been a great experience to learn about teamwork, to learn the fundamentals of the game and then when you can translate that into competition with other athletes, it really just raises the level of everybody's game and everybody just has a great time doing it" said Special Olympics coach Dale Burke.
A budget deficit of more than $100,000 nearly forced organizers to cancel the annual sporting event. But thanks to an aggressive fundraising campaign, and generous donors, Special Olympics Hawaii was able to save the holiday classic.
