Hawaiian Christmas Ideas: Hui Ku Maoli Ola Plants

HONOLULU (HawaiiNewsNow) - All week in our Hawaiian language segment, we're bringing you some great gift ideas for something uniquely Hawaiian. This Monday, Amy Kalili shows us how a native Hawaiian plant can make a great christmas gift.

From fruit trees to flowering shrubs, plants are a perfect Christmas gift. If you give a plant as a Christmas gift, that one gift can keep on giving to the ohana.

More than 140 native plants are grown and sold at this nursery in Kane'ohe. Many come to buy that specific plant. It is very fragrant, similar to the gardenia. And there are native plants for those on your list who may not have a green thumb. Like the nohu.

This is a great plant because it is strong and its flowers are pretty. Be careful though because it has thorns.

And of course, your gift buying experience at Hui Ku Maoli Ola is a learning experience, too, with all of Matt and Kapaliku's knowledge about native plants which they happily share.

We enjoy growing these Hawaiian plants and nurturing the cultural knowledge that comes along with that.

Maoli Ola is offering a 10 percent discount on all plants for the holidays and even a special discount on top of that! If you speak Hawaiian, come in and we will give you another 10 percent off.

Check out PlantNativeHawaii.com to look over a plant list and then make your way to the nursery for some great Christmas shopping!
