HONOLULU (HawaiiNewsNow) - The OIA and ILH will face off in the division one state football championship, as Kahuku takes on Kamehameha. The Red Raiders got thru the semifinals with three field goals by Cameron Mercado including a 49 yarder.
"It was something new for Kahuku," said Red Raiders head coach Reggie Torres. "Kahuku's had kickers before but he's more consistent, he has a strong leg but he's consistent. It gives us confidence in the red zone that we can come away with three points."
Kahuku's run game has also lead it to a perfect 12-0 record.
"The whole game they say we're going to put a tight end here a fullback in the back field and we're going to just run it down your throats, said Warriors coach David Strant Jr. "So they have a lot of confidence in what their athletes can do. And that's kind of scary because basically they're pointing to a hole and saying we're going to run right here try and stop us."
TC Campbell is Kamehameha's main offensive pace setter. The Warrior quarterback is coming off a stellar performance with five touchdowns against Leilehua in the state semifinals for a 40-0 blow out. His coach says Campbell has come into his own.
"You know TC didn't start of the season very well, said Strant Jr. "But our offense grows as the quarterback grows and that's with any program. As your offense grows you can expand and grow in your package."
"I'm just impressed with their offense package, said Torres. "He's surrounded by good athletes but he's also calm in the pocket and he can run with the ball. So that's the scary part, trying to keep him in that pocket."
