KAILUA-KONA, Hawaii (HawaiiNewsNow) – US Coast Guard and Hawaii County Fire Department crews searched waters off Kona for a second day Friday. 58-year-old Sam Bower of California had rented a 21-foot boat at Honokohau harbor Wednesday morning was supposed to meet friends at Kealakekua Bay but never showed up.
At 6:15 PM Wednesday the Coast Guard was notified that the rented boat was running in circles with no one aboard about three miles north of Honokohau.
Bower was wearing a black and gray rash guard and black shorts when he was last seen.
The Coast Guard cutter Kiska and an HH-65 Dolphin helicopter from Oahu were involved in the search Thursday as well as a rescue boat from the Hawaii County Fire Department.
Anyone with information on Bower's whereabouts is asked to call Hawaii island police, the Coast Guard in Honolulu at 808-842-2600 or via VHF marine band radio channel 16.
