Man in Ewa Beach standoff surrenders

EWA BEACH (HawaiiNewsNow) - An armed man who barricaded himself inside his apartment is now in police custody. Police said he is a member of the armed forces.

Officers swarmed Polea Street in front of the Coronado apartments in Ewa Beach. They received a call that a 29-year-old man with a rifle was threatening to kill himself. Some residents were evacuated from nearby homes when the incident started around 9:30 Wednesday night. Others were told to stay inside.

Negotiators talked to the man, and he finally surrendered around 2:40 Thursday morning. He was taken to a hospital. Police will open a reckless endangering case.
