HONOLULU (HAWAIINEWSNOW) - The latest report on weekly jobless claims suggests that unemployment may have eased a bit more since October, when we now know the actual jobless county fell.
The weekly jobless claims for November show this. Three of the last five reporting weeks have seen jobless claims below 20,000. Before that, the last time this happened was early April.
Over the summer there were between 21,000 and 22,000 claims most weeks, so the improvement is no more than a seventh better than peak, representing a bit of seasonal retail hiring. The decline has been mostly on Oahu, where all three unemployment offices showed at least small declines.
On the Big Island there was a marginal decline in Kona but most improvement was in the Hilo office. Maui county was flat, just seven more claims than the previous week, four of them in the Kaunakakai office. Kauai was down eleven claims out of nearly 700.
