HONOLULU (HawaiiNewsNow) - Budget conscious shoppers crowded Hawaii stores on Black Friday to take advantage of one-day sales.

Many retailers discounted merchandise hoping to jump start the holiday shopping season.

"We had our struggles through 2009 and we're not really sure how 2010 is going to be so we're trying to grab as many retail dollars as we can," said Tony Sproat, manager of Urban Flava in Pearlridge Center.

"We have had a gain in sales for the last two months, September and October, and we're encouraged by that so we're excited for the holiday season and hope it will continue," said Fred Paine, General Manager at Pearlridge Center.

A crowd estimated at more than 1,000 people lined up outside Toys R Us in Aiea waiting to take advantage of sales when the store opened at midnight.
