Police investigating Hawaii island shooting incident

HAWAIIAN OCEAN VIEW, Hawaii (HawaiiNewsNow) – Two Big Island men are in custody after a shooting incident that took place in the Kau district Thursday night. Police say that 34-year-old Justin Michaels was shot by John Fitzsimmons, 45, after Michaels broke into Fitzsimmons home.

Investigators say that Michaels entered the home through a window around 10:00 PM, punched Fitzsimmons while he lay in bed, and then exited the home. When Michaels attempted to re-enter the home through the front door, Fitzsimmons fired two shots, hitting him once in the leg.

Michaels was treated for a bullet wound at Kona Community Hospital and then released. Fitzsimmons did not require any medical attention for his injuries.

Michaels was initially arrested for burglary and Fitzsimmons for assault.

Both men are in police custody at the Kealakehe Police cellblock pending possible charges. Police continue to investigate the incident.
