KAPAHULU (HawaiiNewsNow) - An apparently intoxicated driver, a dark road and a telephone pole.

The collision created a traffic mess for people Friday morning.

For hours Friday, drivers had no choice but to go around and the accident even left one business out of customers and out of luck.

Business was supposed to be taking off Friday at Panda Travel. Instead, most of its employees were off.

An early morning crash heavily damaged a telephone pole and police believe the driver was drunk when he plowed into the pole, splintering it.

It supported telephone and power lines, so during repairs Hawaiian Electric crews cut the power off at Panda Travel.

It cost them almost a whole day without any business.

"On a Friday, Kapahulu-area is a very busy street, so it's a big impact to us here," Panda Travel's Agnes Ramos said.

With their phone system also down, some employees were sent home, some stayed, while others continued work at their other office.

"Temporarily it has affected our business, but we've diverted it to our Pali office and our business is continuing through there," she said.

But it wasn't business as usual for drivers on Kapahulu. For almost nine hours, the work closed off parts of the busy road.

Hawaiian Electric crews replaced the entire pole before 2 p.m., Friday, just in time for the evening rush hour traffic.
