Bernadette Borges says her son and his new wife had just left her home in Kailua. Michael Borges dropped off his 14-year-old son and vacuumed his mom's house before hitting the road.
On Sunday, Michael Borges married his girlfriend, Francis, in Las Vegas.
"My brother was at a place in time that, you know..." Tricia Miyashiro, crash victim's sister, said through tears.
But just three days later, the newlyweds were in a Honda Civic that slammed into a stone wall at the corner of Pali Highway and Coelho Way. Michael, the oldest of six siblings and a father of two boys, was killed. Fran remains in the hospital with a fractured hip.
"I saw the car that had run into the wall and knocked over the stop sign, glass all over. It was all over the driveway," Dr. Dennis Momyer, who lives near the scene, said. "I thought I don't know how anybody could have survived that."
Nearby, a van plowed into a guardrail. The three women inside left the scene in serious condition.
Initial reports indicated that a speeding car, weaving through traffic, caused the two other vehicles to crash. But police now say they are still sorting through witness statements and are trying to piece together what happened.
Miyashiro found out about her brother's death through her sister.
"All she said was he's gone," she said through tears.
The tight-knit family is asking anyone with information about this case to come forward.
"If he was at fault, then, you know, we can deal with that also," Bernadette Borges, crash victim's mother, said. "But we're not sure now."
"He has young kids who need him as a dad," Miyashiro said. "I know for them, it would help bring them and our family some peace and closure."
Investigators say Borges' car and the van were going faster than the speed limit. It's not yet known if alcohol played a role.
