HONOLULU (HAWAIINEWSNOW) - Today is makahiki commemoration day, the official state observation of the ancient Hawaiian season of harvest, peace, and celebration. Learn more about this native Hawaiian tradition and have fun while you're at it.
It's that time of year again for the Punana Leo o Honolulu's annual Makahiki Maoli Festival.
There are all sorts of free and fun activities for the whole family.There will be craft vendors, kalo pounding, people giving massages, great entertainment, and food as well.
"This is a fundraiser for the P?nana Leo o Honolulu and the goal is to celebrate our culture and this Makahiki season through Hawaiian langauge," said Alohalani Ho Kumu Alaka'i.
Makahiki season is a significant time for Hawaiians.
"It is the harvest season when the community would gather and it is also marked by Lono's arrival," said Alohalani.
And one of of the traditional activities are the Makahiki games.
"There will be ulu maika, tug-o-war, moa pahe?e, and spear-throwing," said Alohalani.
And the newest addition to the festival, canoe paddling.
"There will be a race from Hawaii Kai to Kaimana Beach," said Alohalani.
