HONOLULU (HawaiiNewsNow) - A Honolulu man is dead after a multi-car crash on the Pali Highway. It happened just before 7:30 PM Wednesday near Niolopa Place in the town-bound lanes.
A spokesman for the city's emergency medical services said that 43-year-old Michael Borges was taken to the hospital in critical condition. He was later pronounced dead.
Paramedics also transported a female victim in her fifties to the hospital in serious condition.
Witnesses said that a Honda Civic was speeding down the Pali Highway when the driver saw a police officer with a radar gun. They say the driver quickly slowed down, but had to swerve past a few cars which caused them to crash.
"A loud noise, a bang, and then strangely it was like a delay, and then another loud bang …there was a car that was weaving in and out that caused the accident. At first I thought it was right here, but a little while later I looked up the road and there was another accident up there. And that one looked worse" said Nuuanu resident Richard Bailey.
One vehicle hit a wall, the other a guard rail.
Police aren't confirming whether a third car was involved or if an officer was trying to catch speeders at the time of the crash. They do say the speeding driver may have been the victim who died but they're investigating all leads.
