Salvage crews remove grounded sailboat

WAIKIKI (HawaiiNewsNow) – The sailing vessel Momentum was successfully freed from a reef off Waikiki Beach early Wednesday morning after being stranded for over two days. The 72-foot ship ran aground Monday morning around 2:00 AM with three people on board, all of whom swam to shore after the grounding.

The marine salvage company Cates International was able to remove the ship in one piece around 3:00 AM Wednesday. The vessel was towed to the Keehi Small Boat Harbor where it was inspected.

Divers found a 30' hole in the port side of the ship’s wooden hull. The ship has been assessed to be a total loss. Although a marine surveyor declared the vessel to be a total loss, the owner of the Momentum, Lief Hart, has indicated that he wants to salvage the ship. The ship will remain at Keehi overnight.
