WAIMEA, Hawaii (HawaiiNewsNow) – A 22-year-old Honokaa woman died Wednesday morning after she lost control of her car, crossed the center line and collided with another vehicle. The accident happened near the Lakeland intersection of Mamalahoa Highway east of Waimea.

The victim was identified as Keshia A. Fernandez. She was taken to North Hawaii Community Hospital, where she was pronounced dead at 8:22 AM.

Hawaii island police say that Fernandez’ 1998 Honda four-door sedan was traveling west on the Hawaii Belt Road around 7:30 AM when she lost control, crossed the centerline and collided with a 2002 Ford multi-purpose vehicle traveling east.

The driver of the Ford, a 34-year-old woman from Kamuela, was carrying four children in her vehicle. The occupants of the Ford were taken to the same hospital with minor injuries. The highway was closed for several hours after the crash but has since reopened.

Fernandez was wearing her seat belt. It is unknown at this time if speed, alcohol or drugs were involved in this crash.

Big Island Police officers have initiated a negligent homicide investigation and have ordered an autopsy to determine the exact cause of death. Police ask anyone who may have witnessed the crash to call Officer Joshua Lewis at 326-4646, extension 229.
