Crew will try again overnight to move boat aground off Waikiki

WAIKIKI (HawaiiNewsNow) – Crews will have to wait until high tide again, to attempt to remove the 72-foot sailing vessel Momentum offshore of the Sheraton Waikiki.  Efforts overnight failed to move it after running aground about 2:15 AM Monday. The boat’s owner and two passengers reportedly swam ashore after the grounding. No injuries were reported.

The ship is lying on its side in about three feet of water near the “Pops” surf break. Officials monitoring the situation say that the ship is in no danger of breaking apart because of relatively low surf and moderate winds.

No hazardous spills have been reported. The US Coast Guard brought in an environmental response contractor to remove hazardous materials from the Momentum. The vessel’s owner says he has insurance and is working with a salvage company to remove the ship.  They expect to begin work on the ship later today.
