HONOLULU (HawaiiNewsNow) - The Honolulu Police Commission is hoping to name a new police chief as early as Wednesday, November 18. That is a week earlier than expected.

The commission met Friday to accept public testimony on the six finalists for the job.

They are acting chief Paul Putzulu, Honolulu police Capt. Louis Kealoha, Phoenix police Cmdr. Harry Markley, Chicago police Cmdr. Gary Yamashiroya, HPD Assistant Chief Delbert Tatsuyama, and Assistant Chief Debora Tandal.

The commission received written testimony from more than 100 people and Friday seven shared their thoughts in person.

The head of the police union told the commission the union wants the one of the four local candidates to be the next chief.

"There's been almost a trend on the mainland where chiefs would bounce from jurisdiction to jurisdiction because there's greener pastures. That is definitely what I want to avoid here," said SHOPO President Tenari Maafala.

The commission will interview the finalists Monday and Tuesday and if all goes as planned, will announce its choice Wednesday.
